13/05/2004: Legionella death linked to hotel
Avon Coroner Paul Forrest has declared that a Cyprian hotel was the "most probable cause" of an outbreak of legionnaires disease in which 52 year old Andrew Collins died.
Michael Tomlinson, who accompanied Andrew Collins on their holiday to Kyrenia reported that his friend had raised concern about the shower in their hotel and described the "brown water" that emerged from it.
Despite it being proved that legionella bacteria was present in the hotels systems it was impossible to say that it was definitely the "mechanism for transmission" as the two men could have caught the disease before going to Cyprus. A verdict of death by natural causes has been recorded.
